In conjunction with the new exhibit, Esn! Jews and Food in America, food writer Matthew Goodman examines The Social History of Jewish Food and the unusual ways Jewish food has evolved around the world over time. Looking at the influence of geography, immigration, and acclimation, Goodman will discuss the crucial Jewish contributions to seemingly-other ethnic dishes such as fish and chips and eggplant parmigiana, and explain once and for all why it's so hard to find a good bagel anymore.
Matthew Goodman is the author of Jewish Food: The World at Table. He writes the "Food Maven" column for the Forward. His writing, on food and other subjects, has appeared in the American Scholar, the Harvard Review, The Art of Eating, and many other publications.
Esn! Jews and Food in America will be on display May 16 through October 3, 2010. The exhibition explores the American Jewish experience through food-related artifacts – signs, menus, ads, and packaging – and reflects the Jewish American search for a balance between acculturation and identity.
